Guide to Safehouse Configuration and Base Claiming on a Project Zomboid Server

This guide explains the configuration of the Safehouse (Base Claim) system on a Project Zomboid server at Raznar. The Safehouse system serves to limit access to players' base territory in order to prevent building destruction (griefing), container looting, and fire.

Standard Safehouse Configuration in Pterodactyl.ini

By default in Project Zomboid, the safehouse parameters have the following initial values:

PlayerSafehouse=false
AdminSafehouse=false
SafehouseAllowTrepass=true
SafehouseAllowFire=true
SafehouseAllowLoot=true
SafehouseAllowRespawn=false
SafehouseDaySurvivedToClaim=0
SafeHouseRemovalTime=144
SafehouseAllowNonResidential=false
SafehousePreventsLootRespawn=true
SledgehammerOnlyInSafehouse=false
IMPLICATIONS OF DEFAULT VALUES

In the initial setup, the PlayerSafehouse value is still false (regular players cannot claim a base independently), while SafehouseAllowTrepass and SafehouseAllowLoot are true (outside players are allowed to enter the area and take container contents). The server administrator needs to update these parameters to enable full protection.

Maximum Protection Configuration Procedure

  1. Log in to the Raznar panel.
  2. Select your Project Zomboid server, open the Files menu, then go into the .cache > Server directory.
  3. Open the Pterodactyl.ini file.

Opening the Pterodactyl.ini file in the Raznar panel

  1. Adjust the following parameters according to server policy:

1. Claim Permission for Regular Players

PlayerSafehouse=true

PlayerSafehouse parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • true: Allows regular players to claim a building independently through the in-game interface.
  • false: Only administrators are authorized to assign a safehouse for players.

2. Area Entry Restriction (Anti-Trespass)

SafehouseAllowTrepass=false
  • Set to false to prohibit players outside the member list from crossing the physical boundary of the safehouse building.

3. Fire and Container Protection

SafehouseAllowFire=false
SafehouseAllowLoot=false

SafehouseAllowLoot parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • SafehouseAllowFire=false: Prevents safehouse building damage from fire exposure or fire weapons (molotov).
  • SafehouseAllowLoot=false: Prohibits non-member players from opening containers, drawers, or cabinets inside the safehouse area.

4. Character Respawn in the Safehouse

SafehouseAllowRespawn=true

SafehouseAllowRespawn parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • Set to true so safehouse members who die can choose to immediately respawn (respawn) inside their base area.

5. Non-Residential Building Claim Permission

SafehouseAllowNonResidential=true

SafehouseAllowNonResidential parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • By default (false), only residential houses can be claimed.
  • Set to true if you allow players to claim industrial and commercial buildings (such as logistics warehouses, gas stations, police stations, and shop-houses).

6. Survival Duration Requirement

SafehouseDaySurvivedToClaim=2

SafehouseDaySurvivedToClaim parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • Determines the minimum number of in-game days a character must survive before being allowed to claim territory. This setting aims to limit speculative claims by new accounts on strategic locations.

7. Territory Validity Period Without Activity

SafeHouseRemovalTime=144

SafeHouseRemovalTime parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • Determines the threshold duration in real-world hours before a safehouse claim is automatically revoked if the owner never visits the base.
  • The default value 144 is equivalent to 6 real-world days.

8. Restriction on Destruction Using a Sledgehammer

SledgehammerOnlyInSafehouse=true

SledgehammerOnlyInSafehouse parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • Set to true so that using a sledgehammer to dismantle world walls or stairs can only be done inside the safehouse area belonging to the relevant player.

9. Loot Isolation from the Respawn Mechanism

SafehousePreventsLootRespawn=true

SafehousePreventsLootRespawn parameter in Pterodactyl.ini

  • Keep the value true to ensure that items stored in safehouse containers are not overwritten by the server's periodic loot refresh cycle.

Applying the Configuration

  1. Click the Save File button in the editor.
  2. Open the Console menu, then Restart the server.

Procedure for Using the Safehouse Feature In-Game

Claiming a Base:

  1. Position the character inside the room of the building to be claimed.
  2. Right-click on the floor area of the room.
  3. Select the Claim Safehouse menu.

Adding a Member:

  1. While inside the relevant safehouse area, right-click then select the Safehouse > View Safehouse option.
  2. Click the Add Player button.
  3. Select the username of the player currently connected to the server.
  4. The added player will have the right to open doors and use containers inside the base.
