Guide to Installing Custom Maps on a Project Zomboid Server
This guide explains the procedure for installing a custom map from the Steam Workshop on a Project Zomboid server at Raznar. Installing a custom map requires additional configuration of the Map= parameter in the Pterodactyl.ini file to determine the load priority of the map regions.
Required Map Installation Parameters
Every map mod installation requires three main configurations in the Pterodactyl.ini file:
- Workshop ID in the
WorkshopItems=parameter - Mod ID in the
Mods=parameter - Map Folder Name in the
Map=parameter (must be placed before the default map entryMuldraugh, KY)
Step 1: Get the Mod Information from the Steam Workshop
As an example, this guide uses the Raven Creek custom map:
- Open the Steam Workshop Raven Creek page.
- Check the mod description section to note the following information:
- Workshop ID:
2196102849 - Mod ID:
RavenCreek - Map Folder:
RavenCreek(if the mod developer does not specify a map folder name, it is usually identical to the Mod ID)
- Workshop ID:
Step 2: Configure the Pterodactyl.ini File
- Log in to the Raznar panel.
- Select your server, open the Files menu, then go into the
.cache>Serverdirectory. - Open the
Pterodactyl.inifile.
A. Add the Workshop ID
Go to the WorkshopItems= line, then enter the Workshop ID of the map in question:
WorkshopItems=2196102849
(Use a semicolon ; to separate it if there are already other mods).
B. Add the Mod ID
Go to the Mods= line, then enter the Mod ID:
Mods=RavenCreek
(Separate with a semicolon ; if there are other mods).
C. Set the Map= Parameter (Map Hierarchy)
Find the Map= parameter. By default, this line is set to:
Map=Muldraugh, KY
Add the custom map folder name in front of Muldraugh, KY:
Map=RavenCreek;Muldraugh, KY
The Project Zomboid game reads the map order from left to right. If the Muldraugh, KY entry is placed first, the default game map will override the custom map region files, so the new buildings and areas will not load into the game world.
Configuring Multiple Maps at Once
If you install several custom maps at the same time (for example: Raven Creek, Grapeseed, and Blackwood), arrange the Map= parameter order as follows:
Map=RavenCreek;Grapeseed;Blackwood;Muldraugh, KY
All custom map folder names must be at the beginning, and end with ;Muldraugh, KY in the very last position.
Step 3: Save the Configuration and Reload the Server
- Click the Save File button in the bottom right corner of the editor.
- Open the Console menu, then click the Restart button.
- Wait until the server finishes downloading the map data and reaches full operational status.
If the server has been running before and players have visited the coordinates of that map region, the old chunk data is already stored in the world save file.
To ensure all custom map buildings are generated perfectly without being cut off (region boundary glitches), it is recommended to perform a Soft Reset on the affected area or reset the world save before loading the new map.
