How to Configure Project Zomboid Server Password & Whitelist
To keep your server safe from prank players (griefers), loot thieves, or base destroyers, you can lock your server so only certain people can join.
In Project Zomboid, there are 2 security methods:
- Server Password: The simplest method for playing together with friends (just enter one server password when joining).
- Whitelist System (
Open=false): A strict method for communities or Roleplay servers (the admin must register each player's account one by one via the console).
Choose the method that best fits your needs below!
Method 1: Setting a Server Password (Simplest)
If you just want a private session with your close friends:
- Log in to the Raznar Game Panel.
- Enter your server, click the "Files" menu, open the
.cachefolder, then go into theServerfolder. - Open the
Pterodactyl.inifile. - Find the
Password=line (usually located in the early lines). - Enter the password you want right after the equals sign:
Password=mabarzomboid123 - Click "Save File" in the bottom right corner.
- Open the Console menu, then click Restart.
- Now, every friend who wants to join must enter that password in the "Server Password" field when connecting in the in-game menu.
Method 2: Enabling the Whitelist System (Secure & Strict)
The Whitelist system prevents strangers from creating new accounts freely on your server.
Step 1: Disable Public Registration (Open=false)
- Open the
Pterodactyl.inifile again in the.cache/Server/folder. - Find the
Open=trueline. - Change its value to:
Open=false - Click "Save File" then Restart your server.
When Open=true, anyone who connects will automatically have a new account created in the server database. By changing it to Open=false, the server will only accept players whose data has been registered manually by the admin.
Step 2: Add Player Accounts to the Server
After the server is running with Open=false, you need to register your friends:
- Open the Console tab in the Game Panel.
- Enter the following command in the console field:
adduser "PlayerName" "AccountPassword"🔧 Example:
adduser "BudiSantoso" "Budi12345" - Press Enter. The console will confirm that the account was created successfully.
- Give that username and password to the player so they can use it to log in to the server.
Account Management Commands in the Console
Here are some additional commands in the Console tab for managing whitelisted players:
| Command | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
adduser "User" "Pass" | Register a new player account | adduser "Andi" "AndiPass" |
removeuser "User" | Remove a player account from the server | removeuser "Andi" |
changeaccountpassword "User" "NewPass" | Change the password if a player forgets it | changeaccountpassword "Andi" "New123" |
Avoid using spaces or complicated special characters in account usernames to prevent bugs when verifying player save data.
